Mold rarely announces itself with a black patch in the middle of the living room. In Western NC homes, it usually starts somewhere out of view — behind a vanity, under insulation, or along a band board in the crawl space — and shows up upstairs as a smell or a symptom long before it is visible.
Early signs worth checking
- Musty “old basement” smell that intensifies on humid days or when the HVAC kicks on.
- Allergy-like symptoms indoors — itchy eyes, sinus pressure, persistent cough — that improve when the home is empty.
- Discolored insulation in the crawl space, especially fiberglass batts that look gray, brown, or sagging.
- Dark stains on drywall, baseboards, or ceiling corners.
- Warped flooring or sticky doors that worsen in summer.
Where to look first
The most common hiding spots in Western NC homes are: under sinks, behind toilets, around exterior wall outlets, in attic spaces near roof penetrations, and along the rim joist of vented crawl spaces. A flashlight, a moisture meter, and ten minutes will tell you a lot.
What to do next
If you find visible growth larger than about 10 square feet, or if anyone in the home has compromised respiratory health, stop DIY and bring in a remediation pro. Bleach on porous surfaces makes things worse — it kills surface mold but leaves the food source and roots behind.
